Prison conditions must respect human dignity — A call for urgent reform

PRISON CONDITIONS MUST RESPECT HUMAN DIGNITY — A CALL FOR URGENT REFORM.

SALONE POLITICAL WATCH.

Salone Political Watch expresses deep concern and disappointment over the disturbing conditions observed in detention facilities across the country, highlighted by the recent situation involving detainee Zainab Sheriff.

Reports and visuals showing a prison bed infested with bedbugs are not only shocking but unacceptable in any society that values human dignity and justice. No human being—regardless of their status, accusation, or conviction—deserves to live under such degrading and unhealthy conditions.

Let it be clear: prison is meant for correction, not for suffering or inhumane treatment.

The presence of bedbugs and poor sanitary conditions raises serious questions about:

– The state of prison management
– The level of oversight and accountability.

– The government’s commitment to human rights

Such conditions pose real health risks, including infections and psychological distress, and undermine the very purpose of correctional institutions.

We remind authorities that Sierra Leone is a signatory to international human rights standards, including the United Nations guidelines on the treatment of prisoners, which clearly emphasize the right to:

– Clean and safe sleeping conditions
– Proper sanitation and hygiene
– Respect for human dignity

Salone Political Watch therefore calls for:

1. An immediate investigation into the conditions of detention facilities
2. Urgent fumigation and sanitation of all prison sleeping areas
3. Improved welfare and living standards for inmates
4. Stronger monitoring mechanisms to prevent future occurrences

This is not just about one individual—it is about the standard of humanity we uphold as a nation.

A country that neglects the dignity of its prisoners risks eroding the moral foundation of its justice system.

We urge the relevant authorities to act swiftly and decisively to address these concerns and restore confidence in the system.

🇸🇱 Every Sierra Leonean life matters—inside or outside prison walls.
