President Maada Bio over the weekend stirred chaos in Sierra Leone and the diaspora when he declared that any member of the SLPP who declares for the opposition APC will die in the morning.
The President made the incendiary remark while commissioning the new SLPP building in his native Bonthe District.
During the commissioning of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) office in Mattru, Bonthe District, President Bio K stated in the Mende language that anyone in the district supporting the APC opposition party “shall die early in the morning”
Verbal chaos immediately erupted on the streets of Sierra Leone and the diaspora in a widespread condemnation of President Bio for what Sierra Leoneans described as a dangerous threat on the lives of members of the opposition APC and another reckless and insensitive statement from the SLPP, in continuation of the precedent set by the President’s wife who once called for mob justice against the APC and various other divisive ruling party speakers , including the Chairman of the party, Mr. James Batilo Songa.
The President’s remarks have gone viral on social media, dominating comments and public discourse on Facebook and WhatsApp.
The Minister of Information and Communication , Mr. Chernor Bah, described President Bio’s use of the word “ death “ as an idiom.
