WHEN DEMOCRACY IS AT STAKE APC LEADERSHIP CHOOSES THE PEOPLE OVER POLITICAL CONVENIENCE

The position of the All Peoples Congress (APC) on the proposed permanent adoption of the Proportional Representation (PR) system deserves serious national attention. At a time when political interests can overshadow the national good, APC Chairman Osman Foday Yansaneh, drawing from his wealth of political experience, has maintained that electoral reforms must serve the people and strengthen democracy. His position reflects why he remains a significant and respected voice in Sierra Leone’s political landscape.
The APC is right to caution against any attempt by the SLPP government to reshape the electoral system for political convenience. Sierra Leone must not adopt a system simply because it may offer a ruling party a slim glimmer of hope in future elections. Electoral reform should strengthen representation, accountability and the people’s direct connection with those they elect; not serve partisan interests. The APC’s position should therefore be viewed beyond party lines and examined in the interest of Sierra Leone.
Under its current leadership, the APC continues to demonstrate the qualities of a party preparing to take responsibility for the country again. Its call for reforms that unite rather than divide Sierra Leone reflects a broader commitment to democratic values and national stability. The leadership of Osman Foday Yansaneh deserves commendation for maintaining this principled stance. At a time when political calculations threaten to dominate the national conversation, the APC is proving that it is ready to return to power with a focus on reforms that protect democracy, strengthen institutions and put the interests of Sierra Leoneans first.
