APC Boycotts Governance Over The Appointment Of Edmond Alpha

By Amb. Penpusher

The main opposition party, the All Peoples Congress Party (APC), has announced a boycott of governance activities in protest against the appointment of Edmond Sylvester Alpha to the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL). The APC has also reaffirmed its decision to withdraw its elected representatives from Parliament and local councils, describing the appointment as a serious breach of the Agreement for National Unity.

In a press statement issued on 3rd March 2026, the party confirmed that its leadership and Negotiating Team attended a meeting convened by the National Peace and Cohesion Commission at the Brookfields Hotel in Freetown. The meeting brought together the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, representatives of ECOWAS, and other international and development partners to review progress on the Tripartite Committee Recommendations.

During the meeting, the APC expressed deep concern over what it described as the Governmentโ€™s continued failure to implement the agreed electoral reforms. The party strongly criticised the appointment of Edmond Sylvester Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner, stating that the decision goes against the spirit and sequence of the reform commitments.

According to the APC, the appointment undermines public confidence in the Electoral Commission and threatens the credibility of future elections. The party maintained that its withdrawal from governance is based on principle and a commitment to electoral integrity, rather than partisan interest.

However, the APC stated that it remains open to constructive engagement once meaningful steps are taken to restore trust in the electoral reform process and uphold democratic governance in Sierra Leone.
