LUNSAR, PORT LOKO DISTRICT – The history of Marampa-Masimera Chiefdom cannot be told without mentioning the remarkable life and leadership of Paramount Chief Bai Koblo Pathbana II, one of Sierra Leone’s most influential traditional rulers and political figures.
Born on 22 September 1912 into the prestigious Pathbana ruling house of the Temne ethnic group, Bai Koblo Pathbana II inherited a rich royal lineage that traced its roots to one of the founding families of Marampa Chiefdom. Growing up during the British colonial era, he developed a deep understanding of both traditional governance and modern political systems, qualities that would later define his long and distinguished reign.
đź‘‘ Ascension to the Throne
In 1943, Bai Koblo Pathbana II was officially crowned as the 43rd Paramount Chief of Marampa-Masimera Chiefdom, with his authority centered in the thriving mining town of Lunsar.
His coronation came at a crucial period in Sierra Leone’s history. The country was still under British colonial rule, but winds of political and social change were beginning to blow across Africa. As Paramount Chief, he became a symbol of stability and wise leadership, guiding his people through decades of transformation that eventually led to Sierra Leone’s independence in 1961.
🤝 A Marriage That United a Nation
Perhaps one of the most celebrated aspects of his life was his marriage to the legendary Paramount Chief Madam Ella Koblo Gulama of Moyamba District.
The union was more than a marriage between two powerful traditional rulers—it became a national symbol of unity and reconciliation. At a time when regional and ethnic differences often shaped political discourse, the marriage between a Temne ruler from the north and a Mende ruler from the south demonstrated that Sierra Leone’s diversity could be a source of strength rather than division.
Their relationship remains one of the most iconic examples of national cohesion in Sierra Leone’s political and cultural history. ❤️🤝🇸🇱

He became an important intermediary between local communities, the colonial administration, and international investors, helping to manage land issues, community concerns, and the social impacts of mining activities.
Many historians credit him with ensuring that Marampa maintained its traditional identity while embracing economic development and modernization. 🏗️⛏️
