Sierra Leoneans , civil society organizations and legal big wigs protest arbitrary arrest of Lawyer who gave legal opinion on TV

Sierra Leoneans,  civil society organizations and legal practioners in the country have been expressing concerns about yesterday’s arbitrary arrest of popular lawyer and legal representative of the opposition All People’s Congress ( APC ) by the Maada Bio Government .

Mr. Macauley was invited to the CID  after he appeared in a talk show on AYV TV  during which he gave his legal opinions on current political issues in the country.

The arrest of Mr. Macauley follows a pattern of  arrests of any citizen who airs any views that disagree with the government policies of style of governance.

The former President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association, Mrs. Basita Michael, made the following post on Facebook :

The Campaign for Human Rights and Development International ( CHRDI ) posted the following :

The Institute for Governance Reform ( IGR )  has also condemned the arrest :IGR condemns the detention of @AdyMacauley
& call for his immediate release. Ady deserves bail just on his name recognition. We note the rising political tension & the August 10 riot; appeal to all authorities to be calm & the Police to protect free speech.

DEVASTATED IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT! AFTER SPENDING THE WHOLE DAY AT THE CID, MY COLLEAGUE, FRIEND, & BRO ADY MACAULEY, WAS DENIED POLICE BAIL. HE ATTEMPTED TO EXPLAIN THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN RIGHT TO PROTEST VS RIGHT TO PROCESS IN A TV PROGRAM. HELP US OH GOD! #SALONETWITTER

Lawyer Ady Macauley’s detention for expressing an opinion on the law undermines free speech, the right to hold opinions, professional legal work and sets a dangerous precedent for all legal practitioners in the future. I call on the SLP to ensure his immediate release.
