Tensions Rise Between Liberia and Guinea Over Assault Incident Involving Guinean Woman

Diplomatic relations between Liberia and Guinea have taken a sharp downturn following the alleged assault of a Guinean national, Zainab Bah, and her infant by Liberian police officers—an incident that has sparked international outrage and a strong diplomatic response from the Guinean government.

Despite Liberia’s formal apology and swift response—initiated by President Joseph Boakai, who ordered an independent investigation into the matter—Guinea has reportedly rejected the apology, insisting on full accountability and transparency. The Guinean Foreign Minister, Dr. Morissanda Kouyaté, made it clear during a high-level diplomatic meeting that his country demands justice for the victim and the swift public release of the investigation’s findings.

In an effort to ease tensions, a Liberian delegation led by Ambassador-at-Large Sheikh Al-Moustapha Kouyate and Liberia’s Ambassador to Guinea, H.E. Forkpa Gizzie, met with Guinea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to present a message of regret from President Boakai and reaffirm Liberia’s commitment to maintaining cordial relations with its West African neighbor.

However, Dr. Kouyaté did not mince words, expressing deep concern over the disturbing video footage circulating online which allegedly shows the Guinean woman being sexually assaulted by members of the Liberia National Police. He warned that such a grave violation, if not addressed with transparency and justice, could further strain the already fragile relationship between the two countries.

Adding to the domestic tension, Liberia’s Chief Imam, Sheikh Ali Krayee, has called for national unity and reflection, warning that the country is “sitting on a time bomb.” He urged Liberians to turn to prayer and peace, emphasizing the need for calm and collective wisdom in addressing the unfolding crisis.

This latest diplomatic flare-up comes amid a backdrop of historical strain between Liberia and Guinea. In November 2024, the two countries teetered on the edge of armed conflict after the controversial extradition of Guinean national Abraham Khalil Cherif. Accused of plotting to overthrow the Guinean government by recruiting former Liberian rebels, Cherif’s removal to Guinea—allegedly without proper legal procedures—ignited tensions that have never fully subsided.

With public outrage growing and international attention focused on the Liberian government’s next steps, the findings of the ongoing investigation and the administration’s response will be critical in determining whether diplomatic relations between the two nations can be repaired—or whether they are headed toward further conflict.

EDITOR’S NOTE

What is not stated by the Montserrado News Media is that the trouble started when Liberia Police went to arrest the woman’s husband for alleged electricity theft. It resulted in a scuffle during which the woman allegedly threw a pot of soup at the Police. An angry officer then removed the woman’s Muslim hijab and this led to a recent demonstration in Monrovia by Muslims outraged at the act.

The Liberian Police Chief apologized to the Muslims for the hijab issue but the Police has since formally charged  the woman’s husband with power theft and the woman with assault.
