UN : Sierra Leone to be represented at 60th Session of Commission on The Status of Women

Sierra Leone is to be represented at the  sixtieth session of the Commission on the Status of Women  ( CSW ) to be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 14 to 24 March 2016.

The Session will be attended by representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world .

Two themes will guide this year’s session . The Priority theme will be “Women’s empowerment and its link to sustainable development”, while the Review theme will be “The elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls (agreed conclusions from the fifty-seventh session)”.

Features of the Session will include a Multi-Stakeholders Forum, to be held on 21 January 2016 during which  UN Women will convene a forum to engage a range of stakeholders in the preparations for CSW60 at UN Headquarters in New York. See the details here :

There will also be an Expert Group Meeting and  in preparation for this sixtieth session, UN Women convened an expert group meeting (EGM) in New York on “Women’s empowerment and its link to sustainable development” from 2 to 4 November 2015 . According to a CSW  bulletin , “The outcome of the Commission’s consideration of the priority theme takes the form of agreed conclusions, negotiated by all States.” The CSW also reports that “The programme of side events, or activities organized outside the formal programme of the session of the Commission, provides an excellent opportunity for Member States, UN entities and NGOs to discuss themes of the Commission and other critical gender equality issues.”

MEANWHILE, communication from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Freetown sent to the Minister Plenipotentiary of the Permanent Mission of Sierra Leone to the UN in New York stated that the Minister of State, Foreign Affairs  ( 2) , Ms. Isata Kabia, will lead this year’s delegation to the Session.
