The saga of a Nigerian dictator : Rename Sani Abacha Street : |
|
Written by Ibrahim Koroma

Wednesday, 14 May 2008 |
|
May I start by thanking you for updating us on a daily bases about what is happening in our beloved country S/Leone. Please allow me space in your widely read news paper to air my views about the renaming of one of our streets in Freetown. Kissy street in Freetown (as it was formally known) was changed to Abacha street by the then SLPP government for no decent reason. Their argument was that the late Nigerian president Abacha, whose name was given to our street was very instrumental in fighting the rebel war. |

"Knowledge is More Than Mere Words" is the first critical assessment of Sierra Leonean Literature in general. After an introduction tracing the historical and literary context written by Eustace Palmer, there are fifteen chapters by ten native Sierra Leoneans, all of them currently professors of English at American universities, and all but one of them either graduates of, or former lecturers at, Fourah Bay College, the University of Sierra Leone. My honest advice goes to the editor of Cocorioko not to allow mischief makers to lead this credible newspaper to abandon the basic and finest tenets of journalism, by pandering to the whims of a ghost captain. I am not about to hold my fire or acquiesce in the presence of a vanquished man who claims he never withdrew under rebel fire and will not do so now. READ THE FULL ARTICLE : |

The Minister of State for Presidential and Public Affairs, Hon. Alpha Kanu, today explained in details to COCORIOKO why the Sierra Leone People's Party ( SLPP) Radio is off the air. The minister took his time to debunk accusations being made by the SLPP that the ruling All People's Congress (APC ) government had deliberately banned the radio to discourage freedom of expression in the country. He described this accusation as complete nonsense and one designed by the SLPP to score cheap points ahead of the forthcoming Local Council Elections. |

Sierra Leone : Is the role of the opposition always to oppose ? |
|
Written by Joseph Sherman : Senior Editor of COCORIOKO

Monday, 12 May 2008 |
|
In this new political dispensation in Sierra Leone in which the S LPP is the major opposition party after its defeat in one of the most transparent and respected electoral process in Africa, vigorous exchanges and challenges are expected by the status quo to prevail. However, there should be no room for serious acrimony; neither should they as opposition becomes disloyal or political discourse be allowed to be disagreeable. |
