Every April 27 in Franklin Township is Sierra Leone Day. This was the result of a proclamation by the Franklin Township, Somerset , New Jersey last year , thanks to the remarkable work of the Sierra Leone Community in New Jersey. The 51st Independence Anniversary of Sierra Leone is being celebrated with pomp and pagentry like last year’s , starting with a massive parade in the township today, Saturday April 21, 2012 and followed by the big Independence Anniversary Dance later tonight at the Somerset Hotel , on the opposite side of the Ukranian Centre.
Sierra Leone’s national flags-The green, white and blue–are fluttering in the wind in the business district of Somerset . This is a great achievement not only for Sierra Leoneans in New Jersey but for the country. This recognition in the United States is a reward for the industry, seriousness and contribution of Sierra Leoneans to the development of North America. That a whole state would give our country such a recognition is also a testament of the ability of Sierra Leoneans to excel and live productive lives wherever they find themselves. It is also a recognition of the community development aspirations and skills of Sierra Leoneans in New Jersey.
