Sierra Leone is really going dramatic places under the All People’s Congress (APC ) Government led by the progress and results-driven President Ernest Bai Koroma. The cheers had hardly died down after last week[s heartwarming news that the government had brought the railway back to the country when news emerged yesterday about yet another big achievement by Sierra Leone –The nation has deservedly won one of the 2010 Millenium Development Goals (MDG) AWARDS.
According to Ms Suzette C. Limchoc, the Programme Assistant of the UN Office for Partnerships
of UNAIDS Sierra Leone ,The MDG Awards Committee was particularly impressed by Sierra Leone’s achievements in developing an innovative and comprehensive national strategy.
Ensuring an efficient health care delivery system for Sierra Leone was one of the flagship national development programs initiated by President Ernest Bai Koroma as soon as he came to power in 2007. In no time, Sierra Leone’s very alarming maternal and infant mortality rates started coming down and the government bolstered its efforts this year by launching free medical care for nursing mothers , pregnant women and children under five years old. The result has been terrific. Not only has health care undergone a dramatic improvement, Sierra Leone took a very significant step in efforts to fulfill one of the MDGS : Goal No.6 –Combatting HIV/AIDS , MALARIA AND OTHER DISEASES.
The good news was broken to the Permanent Mission of Sierra Leone to the UN in New York yesterday by the Director of the National HIV/AIDS Secretariat (NAS), Dr. Brima Kargbo who unveiled the original announcement from Suzette C. Limchoc.
These spate of achievements show that Sierra Leoneans must be patient with President Ernest Bai Koroma and government. This is a clear demonstration that the government is doing well, despite the daunting problems besetting the country, problems that the government met anyway when it came to power in 2007. The country is heading in the right direction under President Ernest Koroma.
