Campaign for Good Governance Boss expresses reservation about summoning of the Auditor General by Parliament

The Parliament of Sierra Leone has summoned Auditor-General , Mrs. Lara Taylor-Pearce to appear before the House. No reason was given for the order. However, Sierra Leoneans have been complaining about the action by Parliament.

The Auditor General recently released the 2019 Audit Report which indicted the government of massive and large scale corruption and wastefulness of public funds.

MARCELLA SAMBA-SESAY

Marcella Samba-Sesay, the Executive Director of Campaign For Good Governance, made it clear today where their organisation stands with regards the invitation of the AG, Lara Taylor-Pearce.

According to the CGG boss, they’ll be writing to parliament to raise genuine concerns.

“When it comes to #auditing, it’s the auditee who has to come and clear and not the Auditor General who presented the report. It is not her responsibility.”

Marcella Samba-Sesay emphasised that ‘the law gives the institution the power that, in the performance of their functions, they’re not #answerable to any entity.’

However, she said they have no issue with the invitation as long as it’s to clarify contents of the report.

“We don’t have any issue. Perhaps parliament doesn’t understand something. If they want to clarify something, then it’s fine. If they don’t understand certain content in the report, that’s fine. They are the technical people who put the report together,” says the CGG boss.

She warned that if it’s for any other reason, then it’ll be an attack on democracy and that they don’t want to see people performing their functions under duress.

“We see parliament as the bastion of hope in #SierraLeone. They should protect these institutions for them to be functional. Parliament should be a supportive entity.”
