Former President Ernest Koroma to leave for Nigeria after being granted bail on medical grounds by Sierra Leone High Court

Former President Ernest Bai Koroma is heading out to Nigeria after being granted bail on medical grounds by the High Court of Sierra Leone.

This morning, lawyers representing the former President , led by Hon. Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara,  appeared before the High Court , presided over by Justice S.O. Taylor , with medical documents of Dr. Ernest Koroma, to seek bail  to allow him to travel abroad for treatment.

WASHINGTON, DC – APRIL 17: Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma attends a meeting about the fight against the Ebola outbreak in West Africa during the World Bank-International Monetary Fund Spring Meetings April 17, 2015 in Washington, DC. The World Bank announced Friday that it would provide an additional US$650 million over the next year to help Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone to recover from the social, economic and health impact of the Ebola crisis. While the proceedings were going on, there were many conflicting reports on social media. One report, peddled by supporters of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP), who are very angry that the ex-President is going away, said that the High Court has refused the appeal and rather ordered an international cardiologist to travel to Freetown to treat him. The other report , from mainly members of Dr. Koroma’s party, the All People’s Congress ( APC ) said the bail had been granted and Dr. Koroma would be leaving soon for Nigeria.

It turned out that the latter information was the correct one and the bail had been granted. The decision was then transmitted to the Magistrate Court which had started trying the former President for alleged Treason, in connection with the November 26 events in Freetown, which the SLPP Government has described as a coup attempt.

The announcement sent APC  supporters in raptures of joy, for they had been fearing for the life of their iconic former leader as they did not trust his safety in the hands of the Maada Bio government. On the other hand, supporters of the SLPP and  some renegade APC  members who have a morbid hatred for their former leader, though he blessed them with lucrative positions during his rule, went into a meltdown, expressing their anger publicly on social media. They blamed President Maada Bio for not standing up to the moves to have former President Koroma leave the country and some described him as a weak president, not fit to die for.

Many people believe that today’s decision by the High Court is not unconnected with concerted efforts by the Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS )  to have ex-President Koroma plucked from Sierra Leone for his own safety and to help calm down tensions in the country.

Today’s dramatic events came at the heels of escalating tensions and very high security alert in the nation after reports that on this very day  civilians were planning a big revolt against the government and retired and serving soldiers  were also planning to take to the streets to protest against the government.

Some streets of Freetown are unusually quiet this morning.
Traffic is light, and public transportation is limited. Soldiers and OSD personnel have been deployed at several key junctions, including Upgun, Dwazack, Kingharman Road and Shell.
This may be due to an increased security presence in the wake of recent events.
Either way, it’s an interesting change from the hustle and bustle that typically characterizes Freetown.
