The President of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Sissoko Embalo, has been arrested by the country’s armed forces for rigging the Presidential Elections.
President Embalo was handcuffed and dragged away by soldiers claiming to be acting in the national interest, after he highjacked the presidential elections and disqualified the opposition candidate , Mr. Fernando Doas, whom sources say actually won the elections. Both men have been claiming victory.
A diplomatic official lamented to the COCORIOKO newsmagazine that coups were a dying phenomenon but they have raised their ugly heads again in Africa . He blamed African leaders for provoking coups because of their failure to rule justly and promote free and fair elections, democracy, human rights and free market economics .
He warned that civil war and coups will return to Africa if presidents continue to rig elections as done recently in West African countries, including Nigeria and Sierra Leone. The diplomat also blamed the international community for their connivance and complicity in favour of corrupt African presidents who allow them to plunder their countries’ resources in exchange for helping to turn a blind eye to their atrocities.
