Sierra Leone once again edged towards chaos through SLPP’s undemocratic and one-tribe oligarchy : Reason international community meeting former president and stakeholders
By Kabs Kanu
The international community has become alarmed by the state of chaos and early warning signs in Sierra Leone that another war could be imminent , if tempers are not controlled and if political tolerance, democracy and the rule of law are not allowed to prevail.
Remember that the UN Security Council has developed a deterrence system that detects early warning signs that a country may be fragmented and heading to war . It has resolved that once these early warning signs begin to manifest, efforts must be stepped up immediately to engage state actors , who include the sitting President , members of the governing party, the opposition, civil society and interest groups.
The system was set up to avoid repetition of the mistakes made in the 1990s which led to the UN receiving blame that it did not act in time to forestall the war that later engulfed countries like Liberia , Sierra Leone, Rwanda , DR Congo , Somalia, Kosovo and Bosnia, leading to horrible war crimes, crimes against humanity , ethnic cleansing in some cases and massive loss of lives . The UN and the international community will no longer sit down and wait for war to erupt before acting as they did in the 1990s.
What is going on right now is that stakeholders and moral guarantors of peace, democracy and stability have detected early warning signs that Sierra Leone may go back to war if the principle of early intervention and deterrence are not applied now. That is why they have sprung into action and are engaging the SLPP government, the opposition , civil society and interest groups to determine what is going on and what could be done to avoid our country descending back into chaos .
During these diplomatic engagements, stakeholders listen to all the grievances of the respective parties . They already know what is going on because they have diplomats on the ground in Sierra Leone but in diplomacy you have to listen to all sides in a conflict.
Sierra Leone is of paramount concern presently . A post war country, things are not going well since President Maada Bio came to power in 2018. Things are getting out of hand and unless national reconciliation, political tolerance , peace , democracy and the rule of law are made to prevail, it might not bode well for the country .
This message was clearly conveyed by today’s press release from the United Nations Office which has been posted in many forums in the social media .
I want to therefore advice SLPP supporters to stop spreading lies and wicked propaganda .
President Koroma remains an active player in the Sierra Leone political process so his views are mandatory in determining what is going wrong and the immediate solutions that are required to stop the country going back to war .
if SLPP supporters tell you that these engagements with former President Koroma were to warn him , it is a bold faced lie and the usual SLPP propaganda . The international system does not work like that . They will not single out one state actor to ostracize when tensions that would likely lead to war escalate in a country .Sierra Leone edging back towards chaos
