Heavy gunfire across Freetown, but situation now reported calm as nationwide curfew declared

By Kabs Kanu

Shortly after midnight today, heavy gun and artillery fire started rocking the Sierra Leone capital of Freetown but as at this time of writing , there were  only conflicting reports about armed men breaking into the armory at Wilberforce and carting away a volume of ammunition.

The gunfire was very heavy around Wilberforce Barracks and the presidential lodge. As it rattled across the city, frightened residents called their relatives and friends abroad to report the problem. Some sent audios of the gunshots in the dark night sky.

Sporadic gunfire was still being reported in the city by dawn  and shortly after daybreak , the Sierra Leone Ministry of Information announced in a press release that a curfew had been declared and it advised everybody to stay indoors. The statement assured the public that the government and security agents were in full control of the situation.

Whatever was going on, it seemed like the situation had been brought under control, although some people on social media were still reporting hearing gunshots in their vicinities.

We will bring updates as they come in.
